mTLD, the company that administers top-level domain name .mobi, has made available a 149 page long list (PDF) of premium site names. The mentioned document is a compilation of commonly used (“generic”) words and phrases which mTLD has set aside for equitable allocation using other than a traditional (aka – auction) first come first serve basis. A final list will be published prior to the launch of the allocation process.
dotMobi always had some controversy around it, as mTLD insisted that the new domain is necessary to ensure a high quality mobile Internet experience, and they plan to police all .mobi sites to ensure an appropriate visibility on designated handsets and with the designated browsers. On the other hand, critics say the initiative is unnecessary given the growing proliferation of mobile browsers and some even say the domain could be harmful.
