So is SIP versus Skype the same as BetaMax versus VHS? BetaMax was the better technology that lost because of the marketing drive behind VHS. No, I don’t think so (because in this case both can coexist), I think we will see gateways between technologies. Just as Skype has Skype-in and Skype-out their gateways to the public telephone network, we will see Skype-in/out eventually supporting SIP. The issue will be that the gateways cost money and the users will migrate to the systems where there are the most other users or their phones will support both technologies. This may mean Skype wins because of their immense marketing drive but the like of Nokia and Microsoft will be pushing the alternatives and they have immense marketing too.

The Nokia 770 was an amazing first generation device that raised a lot of eyebrows. However being that it was a first generation product, everyone had a feature request and complaint. Personally I need a larger resolution screen and a keyboard (BRING BACK PSION) while some others wanted the thing to take SIM cards. As to why this thing had Google talk as opposed to Skype … I’m left with the assumption that Nokia might have asked Skype to build an app for the 770, but they refused. I could be wrong however, and I most certainly hope I am since if I were building a social network I would make sure my protocol worked on every device that has the power to connect to the internet.
