Modular designs are the way to go. You get to pick what options and features you want and do away with those you don’t. It’s really unfortunate that cell phones, for the most part, are designed as “take it or leave it” devices. How many times have you found yourself thinking that new cell phone is amazing, if only it had a (GPS/Keypad/Camera/USB support/longer battery/Biometric security) feature?
Now, you get to choose your cell phone’s features. WILLCOM’s WP004 modular phone starts off as a base phone for phone calls and other basic features – to which you can add six detachable modules, each with different features. Done with the GPS feature and want more battery life? No problem, just pop out the GPS module and click in the battery module. Need to secure your phone? Fine, just swap in the biometric fingerprint scanner module – you get the idea. You can hook up your WP004 with a GPS, Fingerprint reader, USB connection, Camera, keypad, or battery module to meet your needs.
The design is a bit rough around the edges, but the idea is right on! With time and design evolution, modular cell phones could the next big thing. But, the design really has a lot of evolving to do.
If only these modules were smaller, we’d be all over this thing. Check out the pics!
