hp logoHewlett-Packard Co. is looking to turn your cameraphone into your own, personal shopping advisor. The company demonstrated their new color-matching prototype technology today – dubbed “Color Match”. The mobile service, developed by HP Labs,  aims to match colors that complement each other and give you color-advice right on  your mobile phone.  With the ability to find matching colors for just about any application, the Color Match service could be used to advise shoppers looking to buy anything from cosmetics to shirts and ties.

Users can get color-matching advice by holding a specialized color chart in front of the target object (your face or your shirt). The picture is sent using MMS to HP’s “advisory server” – which analyzes the data, corrects for abberations, and actually makes recommendations on what colors would best match the target’s color. The suggestions are sent back to the user’s phone through a simple SMS text message.

Look for this service in the near future. HP is in the works to market this technology to consumers and retailers alike. Finally! We can soon walk into a cosmetics store and not have to worry about what color eye-liner best goes with our favorite lipstick. We couldn’t be happier.
