European owners of the Samsung SGH-i600 smartphones can now upgrade their devices with the latest version of the Windows Mobile OS. But, it’s not just Windows Mobile 6 that will appear on your i600 — the ROM update will also include the new version of Office Mobile which supports Office 2007 XML-based file formats, as well as Windows Live and Windows Live Messenger.

Unfortunately, at the moment, the upgrade is available only for users in Netherlands and Russia, with other localized versions (France, Germany, Italy and UK) to follow soon. Also on the bad side is the fact that in order to update your smartphone with Windows Mobile 6, you’ll need a PC with Windows XP and ActiveSync 4.x. So if you’ve already installed Vista, check out your colleague’s PC – he may still have the XP running on his machine.

At the end, we need to warn you NOT to try updating your Blackjack — even though the Samsung i600 is known as the European Blackjack, the radio parts in the two devices are different (i.e. BlackJack excludes WiFi and the front video calling camera). Finally, our source – the::unwired got the word that the upcoming i600s will be sold with Windows Mobile 6 pre-installed!

Samsung SA told me on Friday that the upgrade can be performed by Samsung service centres. No idea how much that will be. Why can’t Samsung adopt a common policy internationally?
