By Dusan Belic on Thursday, October 4th, 2007 at 2:46 AM PST In General

Banned since the contested elections in 2005, SMS has at last been turned back on in Ethiopia in time for their new millennium, on September 14th.

Ethiopian flagDuring the elections in May 2005, Kinijit used SMS to communicate with its supporters, and following election results being contested, the government closed down parts of the press, blocked access to web sites and shut down SMS on June 10, 2005.

Now, the SMS is back and to celebrate the restoration of the service, a short text message was sent to all mobile phone users in the country saying: “[Wishing] you [a] happy Ethiopian Millennium. And now the SMS service is launched.”

Luckily, we don’t have to deal with any similar issues…
