dotMobi logoThe company behind the .mobi Internet domain, dotMobi, has announced that it has successfully closed its first-ever online auction on October 3. dotMobi. 100 domain names were auctioned through Sedo.com, generating more than $850,000.

Highlights:

  • There were bidders from 34 countries.
  • The most desired domain was hosting.mobi that was sold for $101,000, followed by bank.mobi ($51,501), download.mobi ($51,500), currency.mobi ($47,000) and insurance.mobi ($42,005).
  • Second .mobi auction is scheduled for October 31, and will feature such domains as car.mobi, gps.mobi, gay.mobi, kiss.mobi, love.mobi and map.mobi. The complete list of names for the second auction, along with terms, condition and buyer requirements, are available at PremiumAuction.mobi.

Now, I keep wondering is this a living proof that .mobi domains are needed? Most probably they are, or that’s at least until we all get unlimited data plans and WVGA screen equipped handsets…
