Weather ChannelThis week, The Weather Channel will launch a new innovative mobile video forecasts service that will include the production and streaming of over 5000 mobile video clips every day covering 100 cities, with new clips made available every 30 minutes.

Among The Weather Channel partners Vantrix, a content delivery startup, is playing the crucial role, along with the four largest carriers in the U.S. – AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, which will participate in a trial program. The video files will be encoded in H.264, meaning iPhone users will also be able to see a piece of the action.

We all know weather is an important piece of information we need on a daily basis, and have no doubt about it – The Weather Channel knows that as well. Hence, their pilot program will involve 80 million (yes, that’s (eighty million) handsets. Impressive, don’t you think?
