iPhone v1.1.2 firmware hardware unlocked by GeoHotIt almost seemed that the iPhone-hacking community had given up on trying to unlock the iPhone v1.1.2 firmware. With the iPhone v1.1.3 firmware already fully ensconced in the iPhone-wild, unlocking a previous firmware is kind of a moot endeavor. “Kind of” being the operative phrase here.

We’re sure there are plenty of unlocked-iPhone users out there that are dying to rock an unlocked version of the v1.1.2 firmware. After all, the bump up from v1.1.1 to v1.1.2 does offer some benefits – nothing like what v1.1.3 offers over v1.1.2, but it’s still nice to get a few added features.

Remember that bushy-haired, college-bound geek that posted the first iPhone-unlocking hack? Well, George Hotz, better known in the iPhone development/hacking community as GeoHot, is back on the iPhone unlocking-tip. The college freshman has announced a new hardware-unlock method for opening up the baseband radio on iPhones with v1.1.2 firmwares. The hack requires a hardware-based downgrade of the bootloader from v4.6 down to v3.9, followed by some AnySIM magic.

GeoHot has posted the fairly advanced unlock-instructions on his website. Please understand, there is a significant risk of ending up with an iBrick. So, unless you really know what you’re doing, we’d hold off for a software-based unlock solution.

And, speaking of a software unlock method, we hear there’s one currently in development. So, if we were you, we’d hold off on any hardware-hacking.

Oh, and we’re going to guess that the Nissan 350z, that George Hotz got for free, didn’t really do anything for the kid’s college social life. After all, he did have the time to do what no one else in the iPhone hacking community has managed…again.

Find the hardware-unlock instructions here.
