It’s that time again. The Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update is again out and about for all you WinMo fans to enjoy. Except this time around, it’s an official WM6.1 ROM straight from HTC itself.

After seeing more cooked, unofficially official, and leaked Windows Mobile 6.1 ROMs floating around the intertubes than we care to count, HTC and Sprint have finally gotten their WM6.1 update posted and ready to usher your Sprint HTC Touch or Sprint HTC Mogul in to the Windows Mobile 6.1 era.

Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update for HTC Touch and HTC Mogul

The Windows Mobile 6.1 update for the Sprint HTC Touch brings with it support for EVDO Rev. A, an Opera web browser, on-screen QWERTY keyboard, and enhanced GPS via Sprint Navigation. Find the new Sprint HTC Touch Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM here.

The Sprint HTC Mogul’s Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM enables Sprint TV, EVDO Rev. A, Sprint Navigation, and a Task Manager to force-quit certain annoying Windows Mobile applications. Find the new Sprint HTC Mogul Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM here.

As with all ROM updates, backup all your data before flashing to the new ROM – you will lose ALL of it. And, follow the directions. Paperweights are nice, but not when they cost a few C-notes.

I’m confused, the date of the old ROM is newer than the date on the new ROM, not to mention the Radio Version is higher on the older one. Is this some sort of Photo Shop to get the point across? In any case, I don’t know what really makes this new. My ROM (3.35.651.2) came installed with my phone a few of months ago, had turn-by-turn GPS out of the box. My version is between the two above screen shots but dated before both (02/22/2008) and the radio version is older (3.35.04). Anyway, it seems like most Mogul users don’t need this “update”.

    Those screens aren’t before/after shots.

    Touch on the left.
    Mogul on the right.

Touch gets the newer radio in the official release.

Not sure about “need”, but it is an upgrade (WM 6.1 and snappier GPS) that all Mogul owners can take advantage of.

Ahh, that makes much more sense, thanks for clearing that up for me.

I live in India and have HTC touch(Vodafone as service provider) can i use this installation for my Windows 5?

So, I decided to update to the latest ROM yesterday, and I have to say that, for me, it was more than worth it.

I was having a GPS issue where if I was using any program with the GPS active, pushing power (to sleep the device) would disable the GPS, then after waking it back up it would prevent me from re-acquiring my position until I did a soft reset (reboot)

Installing this patch totally remedied the problem, and added a couple of very-minor features. One cool improvemnet is the addition of an option to increase the size of the start menu icons, providing better finger navigation for the fat-fingered.

I also feel like the device is faster and smoother overall but I’ve only been running it for 20 hours now so it’s probably a somewhat subjective opinion. Even the GPS feels faster after this update – this morning was foggy/overcast and it locked on to 6 or 7 satellites in what seemed like no time at all. It also says it added Sprint TV, which I can’t really remember seeing before, but for some reason doesn’t seem new (I won’t use it anyway) but, if you don’t have Sprint TV and you want it, this patch will do that for you.

I wanted to chime in and let everyone know why, as it turns out, you may end up wanting to upgrade this time, but there’s not any amazing reasons to go through the pain of backing up all of your contacts and settings and restoring them.

I would love to have the upgrade for radio & tv purposes but I can’t seem to back up my contacts on my computer and have too many to go through the pain of writing them down. Any suggestions?

Just bought my Mogul a week ago. First time using PDA’s since late 90′s. Impressed! I had mega GPS issues and replaced the initial phone last Thursday. Same problem! Finally upgraded on Saturday to 6.1 and great! GPS worked! Yes, it worked until this morning when I got to work and added Intellisync to get my company’s email. Does anyone have any information on what’s been disabled to prevent me from getting my GPS location? Oh, this is really something! I give PC support via LOGMEIN. Guess what. I demo’d my control over the PC’s to a group at work and they are really impressed! Absolutely amazing!

Why isnt there a link to a sprint or HTC site? Im not likely to download something that is not from an official source.

As i am very pleased with many of the new additions from the upgrade. i am also having some major issues. first the storage card will accept information. as in i can take pics and store files on it, but once pics have been taken they wont show up. they are thee or something is there because they used memory grows. wont show in file explorer or pics and vid’s. also the buttons will double or triple tap about every 10 to 20 tapps. as in if i was spelling my name is Jesse James. it would spell mmyyy name iis jeesse jjamess. some times often some times not as often but always with in a text it will happen. also it will not sync with my computer so i have to email all pics an vids to myself. my battery capacity seems to be diminished as well. any thought, besides re upgrade.

I have bought a HTC Touch and I forgot to ask one question. Can a CDMA phone work on a GSM network. I plan on unlocking it from Sprint and using on my network. Any chances it will work?
