Samsung Bringing SRS to Mobile

Samsung has just licensed some nifty sound tech that will juice upcoming phones for years to come with simulated 5.1 surroundsound. The first time I had even heard of SRS was after finding it tucked away into Windows Media Player, and it honestly makes quite the difference, although I’m still a little iffy about those kinds of applications in mobile after that incident with the OrbitSound speaker… At CES, I chatted briefly with Dolby about their work on mobile which is still in its early stages on a few Nokia handsets, but Samsung is in a position where they can start pushing this stuff out more agressively. They were clearly impressed enough with SRS’s performance on the Omnia to make it worth their while to sign on for a multi-year deal giving them access to SRS Circle Surround Headphones, SRS WOW HD, and SRS VIP+. For music-centric handsets, this could be a godsend once Samsung starts implementing the new audio tricks.
