Huawei has announced HarmonyOS 7, its newest operating system update for smartphones, tablets, PCs, wearables, and IoT devices at the June 12, 2026 Huawei Developer Conference. The company promises significant performance improvements and advanced AI capabilities that mark a major step forward in its software ecosystem.
Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the Consumer Business Group, officially announced the update with emphasis on creating a smarter user experience across all HarmonyOS devices.
The announcement comes as Huawei continues to develop its independent software ecosystem amid global tech tensions. With each HarmonyOS iteration, the company moves further away from Android dependencies while building features that compete directly with iOS and Windows platforms.
HarmonyOS 7 introduces spatial personalization as its headline feature. The system uses hardware capabilities to create 3D effects from any scene and display them on device screens. Users will notice this immediately on lock screens, where wallpapers combine with system elements to create immersive depth effects.
The system UI also gets a visual refresh. Sliders, buttons, and other interface elements now feature immersive light effects similar to Apple’s liquid glass design. However, Huawei claims its implementation offers more interactive and intuitive responses than competing systems.
Agentic AI represents the next phase of HarmonyOS Intelligence. The AI assistant gains stronger generative capabilities that help users create text content, access real-time information faster, and perform system-level tasks. Huawei has expanded the assistant’s system integration to support more in-app commands and handle complex user requests beyond typical AI assistant functions.
The AI improvements extend to practical features like photo editing and system personalization options. Behind the scenes, Huawei implemented the HarmonyOS Intelligent Agent Framework 2.0 with intent-as-a-service architecture. The company claims this ensures task execution rates above 90%.
Performance gains are substantial across the board. HarmonyOS 7 delivers more than 15% better performance compared to HarmonyOS 6.1, according to Huawei’s testing. Users should notice improvements when:
- Launching applications
- Playing games
- Streaming online content
- Navigating system interfaces
The timing of this release is significant for Huawei’s ecosystem strategy. As the company builds its independent software stack, each major update needs to demonstrate clear advantages over Android and iOS alternatives. The focus on AI integration reflects broader industry trends, but Huawei’s system-level approach could differentiate it from competitors relying on cloud-based AI services.
Availability follows Huawei’s typical rollout pattern. The HarmonyOS 7 developer beta launches today for eligible smartphones, giving developers time to optimize apps for the new features. The official consumer release is scheduled for fall 2026, likely coinciding with new hardware announcements.
This update represents Huawei’s ongoing effort to create a complete alternative to Western-dominated mobile operating systems. While the company’s smartphone market share remains limited outside China, HarmonyOS adoption continues growing across Huawei’s broader device ecosystem including tablets, smartwatches, and IoT products.
