Meta’s ‘Project Phoenix’ headset just leaked from its own app

Meta may have accidentally shown the world its next big hardware move. Images of the company’s upcoming mixed reality headset, internally called ‘Project Phoenix’, surfaced after being found buried inside a HorizonOS app Meta quietly released and then pulled. And honestly, this is a pretty significant look at a device that changes what we expect from Meta’s headset lineup.

According to Engadget, the images were originally discovered by UploadVR inside a HorizonOS Prescription Lens app, which appeared to be a placeholder for users who need prescription inserts. Meta pulled the app after the find, but not before the image files were already out there. The photos show the headset from multiple angles, and they tell us a lot.

Phoenix looks nothing like a Quest. It’s slim, glasses-like, and closer in design to Xreal’s Aura headset than anything Meta has released under its Quest brand. One of the images also clearly shows a cable, which lines up with earlier rumors that Phoenix will connect to a separate puck device rather than being fully standalone. That’s a deliberate tradeoff. Thinner hardware means you move the processing somewhere else.

So why does this matter? Because Meta has been dominant in the standalone VR headset space with Quest, but that market has a ceiling. Lighter, glasses-style mixed reality devices are where a lot of the industry is heading, and Meta clearly knows it. Apple pushed that conversation forward with Vision Pro. Xreal is pushing it from the affordable end. Phoenix suggests Meta wants to compete in that middle space with something more wearable than a Quest but more capable than its smart glasses.

A few things are still missing from the picture, literally. No front-facing view means we haven’t seen the camera setup yet. But based on reports that Phoenix will use hand-tracking instead of dedicated controllers, there’s almost certainly a camera array up front. Meta is also running a session at its Connect event on September 23 covering ‘controller-free interaction’, which is not a coincidence.

  • Glasses-style form factor, very different from Quest hardware
  • Tethered to a separate puck for processing
  • Hand-tracking controls, no dedicated controller
  • Front-facing cameras likely but not yet confirmed
  • Launch reportedly pushed to the first half of 2027

Connect starts September 23, and given the timing of all this, a Phoenix tease feels very possible. A full commercial launch is still likely over a year away. But Meta has every reason to get people excited now. The competition isn’t waiting around.
