southkorea-androidOne of South Korea’s largest mobile operators, KT, is rumored to be working together with Google Korea to bring Android devices and the Android Market to the country. KT is also in talks with the Korean Government to hopefully make Android a reality. This could be tricky, as there are some governmental hoops to jump through before Android could make an appearance.

The first potential problem is that governmental approval is needed for mobile game distribution in South Korea. Details would have to be worked out there, but one would assume that KT would be responsible for policing and maintaining standards set out by the government.

Second, Google checkout (the payment method used in the Android Market) is not yet operational in South Korea. No doubt Google is working hard on this.

In some sort of odd twist that makes next to no sense, Telecoms Korea has reported that the Android Market will open in South Korea in the third quarter… Regardless of any Android-powered device being available in the country or not. Don’t ask me what good the Android Market will be if there’s no one in the country with an Android device… But hey, Telecoms Korea knows better than I do.
