iPhone for the young and young at heart

Quick. What’s the typical age of someone you picture using an iPhone? Be honest, you’re probably working with an image of some 18 to 24 year old hipster holding an iPhone against a colored background. Don’t worry, that’s what Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) wants you to think at the mention of an “iPhone.” In reality, there really is no “typical” iPhone customer.

A new report from  Nielson shows that iPhone users are quite varied, with strong adoption in the mid-lifer segment.

There are just about as many iPhone users aged 55 years or older (17%) as there are iPhone users between 13 and 18 years of age (18%). The 25 to 34 age group represented 29% of iPhone users, with users aged 35 to 54 years old making up 36% of the iPhone subscriber-base. The extremes of the user spectrum are pretty much equally split. More interesting is the near equal split between the two mid-lifer segments (which together account for 65% of the iPhone market). Turns out, the iPhone isn’t just for the young, it’s for the young at heart.

Phone users are also much more likely to use data and internet features on the iPhone as the typical subscriber, which isn’t really surprising news. What is news, however, is that iPhone users are 7x times more likely to use location-based services (72% of iPhone users). On top of that, 40% of iPhone users have yearly household incomes of at least $100k.

That iPhone loyalty tax is starting to make more sense.
