Videos: Layar, the Android augmented reality application we all love, is going 3D this November

Layar, which came out only 3 months ago and has received a hell of a lot of hype, is adding 3D capabilities to their application this November with the launch of Layar 3.0. Thanks to OpenGL, the accelerometer, GPS chip and compass inside mobile devices today, Layar is able to draw 3D objects in real time over a specific coordinate. The CEO, Raimo van der Klein, his the nail on the head when he says “Augmented Reality is an experience medium, not just a tool or a substitute for maps”. Augmented reality, in its current state, is a bit of a toy, a gimmick, since the right user experience has yet to be discovered. It will most certainly not be replacing maps any time soon, but it will be able to give users something awesome to play with, something to experience, and enjoy. Layar is close to making our real world seem a hell of a lot like World of Warcraft, and that can either be an awesome thing or a sign of the apocalypse. Run.
