Tessera Technologies has announced an embedded app for mobiles that performs identification on human faces in devices with cameras on-board. The new FotoNation FaceRecognition technology is available for many platforms including COACH and ARM… and is said to be light on hogging a devices resources (good!).
Michael Bereziuk, Executive Vice President of Imaging & Optics at Tessera commented:
“We are seeing increased interest in facial recognition for consumer devices because of the ubiquity of cameras and the variety of benefits that come with knowledge of the identity of the person being captured by the camera…With the FotoNation FaceRecognition solution, a cell phone camera can automatically tag a photograph containing a specific person’s face and email the image directly to a friend or upload it to a social networking site.”
I’m going to think of this like the ‘Faces’ feature in iPhoto, but for the mobile. At least, I’m hoping this software is as effective (any Faces/iPhoto love out there?). The FotoNation FaceRecognition software is up for licensing from Tessera right now.
