ContactBrief: By 2012 there will be no more Symbian powered Nokia Nseries devices
Last night in London there was an official Nokia N900 meetup. Several members from The Really Mobile Project were in attendance and have learned, from Maemo’s Marketing Team, that by 2012 there will no longer be any Nseries devices powered by the Symbian operating system. They’ve also learned that there are no plans to bring Maemo to Nokia’s Eseries lineup.
The Nseries lineup, for those unfamiliar with Nokia’s portfolio, is composed of devices that have the highest specifications and the “best” technology that Nokia has to offer. The most famous Nseris device, the one that made the world fall in love with Nokia all over again, was the N95. The most damaging Nseries device, the one that made the world think Nokia employees have their head shoved up their asses, was the N97. The Eseries lineup is supposed to be for enterprise customers, but just about everyone and their mother has a Nokia E71 where I live (Helsinki, Finland) since it’s recognized as the last great device to come out of Nokia.
Really I think the catalyst was the N96, but the N97 did cause some serious damage.

Kinda harsh comments there, I mean, the N97 is no where near as bad as the N96. That was a major disappointment. Some of the mid range Nseries devices are good enough for what they are, I mean, the N86, N85, good phones. Nokia have slipped back in the development areas of some devices, but they still produce decent handsets.
With all those new OS coming up this year (and the coming one), maybe it’s time for Nokia to move on. The fact that Andriod and Windows Mobile phone has caught a lot of attentions of the consumers, and shared a large piece of the market recently, pushes Nokia to such a decision.
Didn’t had the impression Windows Mobile has caught a lot of attentions, at least according to reports.
give us some E-series devices with maemo!
Sigh. I still love my N82. The N900 is the only thing that can top my current phone – and even it does not have Xenon flash.
I’ll stick with my N82, and see what else Nokia comes up with on the Maemo platform. As usual, the first all-new device they launch has hiccups, and one ends up feeling like a fool when they launch the N990 or whatever next year with Maemo 6.
So I’ll wait.
Slight correction – there’s no plans *currently* for Maemo outside of N-series, but they’re clearly watching the response to the N900 and subsequent devices so that could change.
