Rogers HTC Dream and Magic owners may be feeling a bit busted after this bit of disappointing news. According to a posting on HTC’s website, which was then confirmed by Rogers, the HTC Dream and Magic will NOT receive an official OS update past Android 1.5. No donut here.
HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience
Sad. That’s all I have to say. When the Dream and Magic launched, the phones were dubbed as part of a ‘revolution’. Well, it appears that if you’re on Rogers and have the Android-powered Magic or Dream, the ‘revolution’ has to hold up at OS 1.5. How disappointing. I know more Android-powered devices will be making their way through Rogers stores, but c’mon Rogers… Toss out the OS upgrade that these users want. You might actually make some of them happy… and happy customers = good business, something you should be mindful of. Especially when you consider how much the competition is heating up on the Canadian carrier scene these days.

And that is even more ridiculous since Android OS is free and open source… Damn as$holes want to save few bucks on support (creating actual update is really cheap).
Hi. There are two other things you should think about if you are considering Android on ROGERS- the network speed and paid apps. I have the Magic and it is an amazing phone coming from the Blackberry especially the browser and integration with Google however the 3G network with “speeds up to 7mps” is total ********* here in Montreal at least. It NEVER goes above 1.4 and most of the time it’s below 1. This makes absolutely no difference for email and things of that nature but for web browsing it’s marginal.
The final stinker is that here in Canada there is NO access to paid apps in the Android App Market. Granted there are many good free apps however this lack of acccess to the other half of the app store is, to me, inexcusable. There are conflicting reports on who is responsible for this App issue but the end result for us Rogers clients is the same.
