After two of India’s state-controlled mobile networks said they’ll miss the year-end deadline for supporting Mobile Number Portability (MNP), the private operators also said they will miss the deadline. The operators told the Department of Telecom (DoT) that they cannot deploy MNP before March 2010. Then comes the testing from the DoT, hence it’s unlikely that MNP could be offered much earlier than the beginning of June.
The original idea was to offer the service in the main cities in January and the rest of the country by April. Now, the operators ask for a single nationwide launch in June.
According to a Nielsen survey conducted earlier in the year, about 18% of Indian mobile phone subscribers would be interested to change network when Mobile Number Portability is introduced.
