Everyone and their mama are getting an app store these days, and India’s Bharti and R-Com are not exceptions.
Market-leader Bharti Airtel said its store will provide more than 1,250 applications across 25 categories, including games, books and social networking apps. The store is available through the carrier’s mobile portal, Airtel Live, and purchasing of the apps is added to the customer’s bill or deducted from prepaid airtime. Of course, free apps will also be available as the carrier tries to empower its users to “transform their phones into smart devices – with the click of a single button.”
As for Reliance Communications (R-Com), they said the first version of their app store will go live for GSM customers by the end of the month. Then, by the end of March, it will be expanded to the CDMA users, as well.
And for the record, seventh-ranked Aircel was the first operator in India to launch its app store.
