While yesterday was full of iPhone 4.0 news, Apple also quietly introduced the next generation of WebKit, which should eventually lead to better browsers on the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Dubbed “WebKit2,” the framework takes a few cues from arch-rival Google.

“WebKit2 is designed from the ground up to support a split process model, where the web content (JavaScript, HTML, layout, etc.) lives in a separate process,” Apple said on the WebKit site. “This model is similar to what Google Chrome offers, with the major difference being that we have built the process split model directly into the framework, allowing other clients to use it.”

It’s going to take some time before it hits the mobile devices, but you can play with the source code on Macs and PCs at the “via” link below.
