The E-Ink display on the Kindle and Nook is cool because it can go weeks without a charge and is quite easy on the eyes but it does look kind of cruddy, especially compared to the LCD display of an iPad or the variety of tablets coming out.
As you can see from the video above, the next-generation E-Ink display will have better contrast and it will start to approach the look of paper. There will also be support for animations, although it still looks a bit crude. This type of display should be hitting manufacturers later this year, so look for products in early 2011.
Is this enough to get me to purchase a dedicated e-reader? I don’t think so, but it’s always nice to see improvements to the display.
