It’s easy to forget that Twitter’s roots are in SMS – that’s why there’s the 140-character limit – but the company has just acquired the messaging infrastructure company Cloudhopper to help it manage the billions of text messages it handles.
“To help us further grow and scale our SMS service, we are happy to announce the acquisition of Cloudhopper, a messaging infrastructure company that enables Twitter to connect directly to mobile carrier networks in countries all over the planet,” Twitter said in a blog post.
It makes a lot of sense because the mobile space is going to be a large area of growth for the micro-blogging company. We already know that nearly 40% of users update via mobile and that will likely accelerate as the company rolls out official iPhone, BlackBerry and Android applications. When you also factor in the cool stuff its doing with geo-location, we’re only bound to get a better mobile Twitter experience.
Feel free to follow us @Intomobile or you can follow my inane stuff too @marinperez. While we’re talking Twitter, I had been looking for a new Android app for my Droid because Seesmic was crashing far too often after the latest update and I stumbled upon Twicca. I’ve only had it for a day but I’m already in love. It’s as gorgeous as the day is long and is very functional. Try it out, friends.
