65,000 Android handsets shipped everyday

We knew Android has been growing at a rapid pace, and typing that sentence is getting a little repetitive. Nonetheless, during a shareholders meeting held yesterday, Eric Schmidt announced that 65,000 Android handsets are shipped every single day day. While that’s quite a number, it’s not exactly what it seems.

The keyword that should be noted in the statement is ‘shipped’. Shipped does not mean sold, so the statement can be a little misleading. Still, the way Android is growing, a good chunk of these phones are surely sold. It hasn’t been too long since the Google earnings call on April 15th, when the number of daily shipped units was at 60,000. So in a little less than a month, 5,000 extra phones are shipped. Comparing those numbers makes the newest announcement ,may not seem so grand, but again, it’s still a solid number.

This number pales in comparison to the iPhone’s daily shipments, coming out around 96,000 a day. Android’s number will surely grow as devices such as the EVO 4G and Samsung Galaxy S come to market. With these devices hitting the US in the near future, we might see another significant jump in shipment numbers in the next coming months. Smartphone options are getting better than ever these days, and most of them are coming from Android. Variety took the “win” this past quarter, and it doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.

With a ton of different Android devices coming down the pipe later this year, perhaps Google can add those devices to their overall smartphone market share, just like Apple did to defend themselves after word got out that the little green robot outsold the iPhone. Sure, you’re gonna have better numbers when you add in your line of iPod Touches with your numbers, but it was a smartphone sales report, not a smartphone OS report.

Android’s coming in force these days, available on all four major carriers at various price points, Google’s OS is doing something right. That’s hard to deny.

What Android device are you looking forward to the most this year?
