While all things Android won’t be until tomorrow, but that sure didn’t stop Google from showcasing probably the world’s largest collection of Android devices to date.
Yes, a large glass case was on the second floor of Moscone West is chalked full of Android phones, a smartbook or two, and Dell’s Streak. Also, there were a ton of little plastic Android figurines scattered through out the case as well. Some highlights to see were the Streak, Sharp’s Smartbook, Kyocera’s Zio, and the Motoroi. While it was all look, and no touch, It was nice to see some of the devices in the flesh. Or in the plastic and metal, rather.
Phones like the LG Ally, and Samsung Galaxy S could also be found in the collection, but they were also available to get some hands-on action with. Due to the very bad WiFi, I left. But it’s not about today. While Google announced the Chrome Web Store, which truly looks like it won’t turn into another side project with the company, we’re IntoMobile, so obviously we are focusing on mobile. That day starts tomorrow, where Android will run rampant, and some interesting joint ventures will be announced as well.
Tomorrow is Android’s big day, and there’s almost no doubt that 2.2 will be announced, and possibly launched. I unrooted my Nexus One just in case they decide to start pushing the update tomorrow. While chances are slim for this, I’m not counting anything out. Vic Gundortra, Vice President of Engineering at Google did say, “We have more than one surprise for you tomorrow.” Unfortunately, these may be things we’ve been expecting all along. Android 2.2, and the Sony Android TV. As much as I’d like Vic to have another Oprah moment, I doubt we’ll be seeing a new phone in our hands by the end of tomorrow’s keynote.
It’s only day one, and this thing is only getting started. We’ve got after parties to be off to. Stop by if you can make it!
