If you buy an iPod Touch today it’s essentially an iPhone except for two major things: the ability to make cellular calls, of course, and the lack of a camera. Well, it looks like one of those problems will be solved, as leaked photos suggest the next iPod will have a 2-megapixel camera.
Like the iPhone 4G/HD leaks, this rumor comes straight out of Vietnam and it could easily be a fake. But, let’s assume it’s real because it makes perfect sense to include a camera, especially considering the iPod Nano can record videos. Apple has a delicate balancing act when it comes to adding features to its music player because if its on par with the iPhone, then it could potentially cannibalize sales.
The 2 megapixels may seem puny compared to the excellent shooter on devices like the Droid Incredible but even the older iPhones were decent at snapping pics. I think it’s safe to assume that we’ll get the touch-to-focus feature and video-recording capabilities.
It looks like Apple will be sticking with the traditional form factor though, as we know that the next iPhone will have a different design. The iPhone 4G/HD will reportedly have a square design and the back will be entirely flat. We’re not in love with the photos we’ve seen but you can’t make too many judgments until the device is in your hand. The phone is also supposed to have a boosted screen that will double the resolution of the current model. I don’t expect the next-generation iPod Touch to rock that.
When can we expect the new iPod Touch with a camera? Well, Apple generally likes to refresh this lineup in September and we’ll keep a look out for it. There’s a slight possibility that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will touch upon the media player at WWDC and the IntoMobile team will be there giving you live, up-to-the-minute coverage.
