The Sprint HTC EVO 4G has just gotten root! We’ve been waiting for this, and just one day before the Sprint’s official launch of the HTC EVO 4G, the rooting process has been made available to the public. But, before you get too excited about rooting your EVO, you should know that this root process will allow you to flash custom ROMs, and other things of the sort, but it also has its limits.
Limits it may have, but root it certainly is. The dev community has already had themes and mods coded, awaiting for the inevitable root of the EVO. And, now that the EVO root is a reality, the modding will continue in full force. The only thing that’s really holding this back is the lack of a recovery image that’s accessible without being near a computer – which means you’ll need to have a computer if you want to flash a new ROM.
While the lack of a custom recover image may not be a big deal for some, there are some out there (us) that are going to miss it. A custom recovery image is what allows you to flash a new ROM on the go – say, on the bus, for example. Sadly that’s not an option for the HTC EVO 4G. You can only boot into the custom recovery while connected to a computer. Another limitation is that you can’t write into the system or recovery while the phone is running the Android OS.
In the end, though, the limitation are more like inconveniences, not deal breakers, by any means.
So now that root is available for the EVO 4G, what now? Froyo. What about the Sense UI? Well, we’ve had some good times, but we’re done with Sense slowing things down when it comes to Android updates. It’s great and all, but we’re just in different places right now, and we’re going to have to choose stock Android over you now.
Expect some great things to happen in the dev space now that the device is rooted. I’d really like to see if they can somehow get the HDMI connection make the entire phone’s UI viewable on the TV, instead of photos and 720p-only video.
