It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Windows Live Messenger when they launched on Symbian and BlackBerry, but it’s now available for iPhone. Windows Live Messenger sure has grown up since its days as MSN – it now includes photo sharing, status updates, on top of chat. The social feed includes information from other networks, like MySpace, Flickr, and Facebook.
Between this app and the recent announcement of Bing as a search option on the iPhone 4, Apple and Microsoft have been getting awfully chummy lately. Windows Live Messenger is not the first iPhone app Microsoft has made, though – they’ve also done Seadragon, which is a really cool way of browsing high-resolution images. There’s a common line of logic that moves like this pit Apple and Microsoft against Google and Android, but in all fairness, the Apple’s products still have a ton of Google software, and with Windows Phone 7 just around the corner, Microsoft getting any of their services out onto any competing platforms (like iPhone) could be seen as damaging. However, given Microsoft’s current position as the underdog in search, mobile, and social networking right now, I think they’ll take whatever help they can get.
