There are some interesting data points out of a recent Appcelerator survey, as the survey showed that mobile developers are highly interested in Apple’s iOS in the short term but there’s long-term interest in Android.
It’s no surprise that developer interest is there for the iPhone, as fourth version is poised to be a tremendous success. The App Store has already shelled out more than $1 billion to app makers too, so it makes sense for these professionals to follow the money.
What is somewhat surprising is the increased interest in the iPad. Appcelerator did a similar survey in March and found 53% of developers were interested but that rocketed up to 84% in the latest one.
Again, it’s all about the Benjamins, baby. After some questions about how successful it would be, the “magical” tablet has sold more than 3 million units in just 80 days.
Even if that incredible pace doesn’t keep up, this shows there is a strong market for the device and Apple customers aren’t shy about purchasing apps.
Apple is the shining one in the sun right now but don’t count out that little green robot from Google. Android interest has staying consistent at 81% but app makers are paying closer attention to this operating system.
In another part of the survey, 55% of developers said Android was a more capable OS (compared to 39% for iOS). Android 2.2, or Froyo, significantly ups the tools developers have, including a cloud-to-device API and stronger overall performance.
More than half of those surveyed (55%) said Android has the best long-term outlook of any OS due to its flexible nature. We’ll soon be seeing that little green robot on tablets, with Google TV and even in cars.
But don’t cry for iOS just yet, as 40% still think it has the best long-term outlook. The platform is gaining traction with the iPad, we could soon see it in a revamped Apple TV, and there are even reports that it will power the next line of touch-capable iMacs.
Looks like it will be a showdown between Google and Apple. Who’s going to win?
