You know what sucks even more than having to sign a three-year service contract to get a reasonably-priced phone? Waiting two and a half years before you can get another one. A leaked document from Rogers shows that as of today, it takes 30 months of service before you’re eligible for a hardware upgrade, which is even longer than the 24 months established last January. Rogers toyed with the global one-year standard for a temporary promo, but obviously they like their money.
This seems like a really poor move in light of new players like Wind Mobile who are going in the opposite direction (i.e. no contracts) and winning over the hearts of peeved Canadian wireless shoppers. I guess Rogers is content to provide a lame token resistance with Chatr until the smaller carriers start providing some tangible threat.
On the one hand, it irks me that Rogers is being like this, but on the other, I can hardly blame them for trying to be as profitable as humanly possible. If any of you are actually angry enough about this, talk with your wallets and switch over to the other guys – I know I’m think about it for when my term is up next summer.
