Cellular South plans to expand to Tennessee and Georgia by acquiring two PCS spectrum licenses from Banana Communications Ventures. In an FCC filing, the carrier also hinted plans to eventually “go LTE” in the areas as part of a wider network upgrade.
Financial terms of the transaction haven’t been unveiled. We do, however, know it’s a license deal only, involving no network assets.
Cellular South’s expansion into the new markets seems like a part of a bigger picture to steadily conquer new markets. Recently we reported on the company’s acquisition of Corr Wireless, a small operator that covers northeastern Alabama and parts of Georgia.
Cellular South is the largest privately held mobile operator in the United States, with licenses to provide wireless service to a population of more than six million people, including Memphis metro area, Mississippi, Northeast and coastal Alabama and the Florida Panhandle through Destin/Seaside.
