T-Mobile’s HSPA+ Network Expanded to Detroit, Other Markets

Following up on an expansion to Chicago, Colorado Springs, Ft. Wayne, Louisville, and Raleigh-Durham, T-Mobile has opened up their HSPA+ network in Detroit, Grand Junction, Harlingen, Lafayette, Montgomery, Roanoke-Lynchburg, and Youngstown.

On paper, HSPA+ can reach up to 21 Mbps, but the standard is 3-6 with peaks of 9 or so. That’s as fast as Sprint’s WiMAX, the coverage is better, and you don’t have to pay extra for it. I won’t even get started about T-Mobile marketing HSPA+ as 4G just to save face next to Sprint. AT&T has just about upgraded all of its network to HSPA+, while Verizon’s gearing up for an LTE launch soon.

The handsets that support these new speeds are few and far between, and the networks will likely start with boring ol’ mobile broadband internet sticks, but by this time next year, that situation will likely change. Anyone in the new markets able to confirm HSPA+ coverage from T-Mobile?
