GeoGroups is a new platform/service that allows creation of location-based groups for families, friends, like-minded individuals and professionals. These groups can be either public or private, and can be created by anyone.

For instance, a private group could be created to track family members and map shared locations. Public utility groups use the service to map nearby weather alerts, WiFi hotspots, speed traps and more. You get the point – you can mark locations that are interesting to a group of people. Moreover, each GeoPost can be beefed-up with photos, links, tips and other helpful information.

What’s especially interesting about GeoGroups is the ability to set location-based alerts (GeoAlerts) within the group and instantly be notified when a member of the group comes or leaves some location.

Of course, there’s also Facebook Integration included, allowing folks to share their location with their Facebook buddies.

At the moment, GeoGroups mobile client is available for the iPhone only, but version for other smartphone platforms is in development as we speak.

GeoGroups can be accessed from the web at geogroups.com, while the iPhone users can grab the application for free from the link below. GeoAlerts service costs an additional $3.99 using an in-app purchase…
