Australian firm ASiQ has announced what they’re claiming to be the most expensive application available in Apple’s App Store. The app, called SafeCell, will run you $12,500 and connects your mobile phone to an airplane’s onboard satellite computer via Bluetooth thereby allowing you to make phone calls and transmit data from your device, rather than having to install a GSM system on the airplane itself. That saves roughly 85 kg of weight and the half million dollar price tag such systems cost according to ASiQ CEO Ron Chapman. The app is also available for Symbian and BlackBerry devices, with an Android version coming soon. Those who order the application before January 30th 2011 get a free phone, noise canceling headset, and hands free kit, but chances are that if you have enough money to own a private jet and buy a $12,500 app, you don’t need a free phone to make you happy.
We see crazy press releases all the time here at IntoMobile, but this one takes the cake, especially since the company that makes the app has a website that looks like it was designed by a guy who thinks GeoCities was the pinnacle of web design. Anyway, isn’t flying all about enjoying those few precious hours without connectivity, to unwind, to talk to the guy sitting next to you about life’s problems? If you do need your connectivity fix, several airlines offer WiFi connectivity, so with Skype you can make calls. Using a mobile phone however, that’s a whole different story, and we frankly had no idea that it would cost $500,000 to make it work, and let’s not forget the roaming costs.
If you’ve got your own private jet, and are going to buy this application, care to send us your review? Hell, care to fly us around for a day or two and let us sip champagne out of glasses served by former strippers turn flight attendants?
