AT&T might give you a free MicroCell if your building has crappy coverage

It seems like January 23 is a big day for AT&T. That’s the day when its trade-in program starts and its new text messaging plans commence. It’s also the day when AT&T will offer free MicroCells to its top 7.5% of customers who may have horrible building coverage. While it doesn’t seem fair that such a small percentage will be getting these femtocells, it’s better than nothing. Especially for those who really need it.

The free program will “target the top 7.5 percent of 3G wireless customers identified as likely to experience poor in-building coverage at home or in small offices.” You’ll have to wait and see if you’re selected by a direct mail offer, and you’ll have to agree to a one-year contract with AT&T.

AT&T is doing everything it can, it seems, to stay competitive leading up to the release of the Verizon iPhone, but will this be enough? If you’ve just about had it with the carrier, its coverage and service, probably not. Consider it an added bonus to those of you who were having serious issues but weren’t planning on leaving for greener pastures.
