Huawei is coming for the ultra-thin crown with new Mate and MatePad Air models

Thin is officially the new spec war. While other brands are racing to cram more cameras onto the back of their phones, Huawei is doubling down on slim design with a fresh wave of Air models for both its Mate smartphone and MatePad tablet lineups. And based on what’s leaked so far, these aren’t just shaved-down versions of existing hardware.

According to Huawei Central, Weibo tipster @FixedFocus has revealed that Huawei plans to launch new Air variants across both the Mate and MatePad series. The source says these devices will bring more meaningful changes compared to their predecessors, which is a good sign. The last thing anyone wants is a rebadged phone with a thinner chassis and half the battery.

The Air branding in Huawei’s lineup has always meant one thing: go light, go thin, and still try to keep the premium feel intact. It’s a tough balance. Shaving millimeters off a device usually means trade-offs somewhere, whether that’s battery capacity, cooling, or structural rigidity. So the claim that these new models will feature more significant upgrades is worth paying attention to. If Huawei can actually move the needle on performance or features while going thinner, that’s a real story.

This also fits into a broader trend that’s been picking up steam across the industry. Apple made waves with the iPhone 17 Air, Samsung has been toying with slim form factors, and now Huawei is pushing its own ultra-thin agenda harder than before. The race to make phones feel more like premium objects and less like small bricks is very real right now.

What makes Huawei’s position interesting is that it’s operating largely outside the Google ecosystem, running HarmonyOS on its devices. That hasn’t slowed the company down in its home market, and it’s clearly not stopping them from investing in hardware design. A polished, slim Mate Air could be a serious flex for the brand, especially as it works to prove that its devices can compete on pure hardware merit.

Details on exact specs, pricing, and availability are still thin (pun intended), but here’s what we can expect the new Air lineup to bring based on the current direction:

  • Ultra-slim profile across both the phone and tablet form factors
  • Upgraded internals compared to previous Air-generation devices
  • Premium build quality in line with the Mate and MatePad flagship positioning
  • HarmonyOS software experience out of the box

There’s no confirmed launch date just yet, but the leak suggests these devices are coming soon. Huawei has been consistent about refreshing its lineups through the year, so an announcement in the coming months wouldn’t be surprising. Keep an eye on this one. If the upgrades are as significant as the tipster suggests, these could be some of the more interesting slim devices of the year.
