There comes a time when I discover a gem on the App Store that I absolutely cannot wait to write about. This is the case with Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP for the iPad as it’s such a unique game that I’m hoping it doesn’t fall under the radar. The more games like Sword & Sorcery EP there are on the App Store, the better and more memorable gaming experiences will be, thus giving mobile games more fuel to contend with dedicated handheld, console, and PC gaming rigs.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery is an point-n-click adventure that has you playing as The Scythian who is hired to protected a small town. I won’t give away too much of the plot since it’ll ruin the adventure if you decide to partake in it, so I’ll continue on to why I think this game is worth your time and money. First, the game may not look like much to the untrained eye, but the way the pixelated characters and surroundings animate are amazing. As you make your way through the game, you’ll be able to poke at various items, animals, and people in the game world, which will either animate them or allow you to read the thoughts of The Scythian about what you interacted with.
The combat in the game isn’t anything mind blowing, but in order to initiate it, you need to tilt your iPad from landscape to vertical. When you tilt your iPad, the game will zoom in on The Scythian, allowing you to block or attack enemies. I thought the simple mechanic of tilting your iPad helps the player focus on the combat and nothing else.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery oozes nostalgia for me as its stylized art style can be seen as an homage to games of the 8-bit era. The soundtrack is also amazing as I caught myself bobbing my head to the beat as I played along. The game is only $5 and I believe is well worth your money. It’s also being published as an indie title, so your $5 will help in making Swords & Sworcery successful which will only help in helping the App Store something much more than a place to get fart and horoscope apps.
