ViewSonic G-Tablet gets its first taste of Android 3.0 Honeycomb

device2

Some surprising news for ViewSonic G-Tablet users out there : Android 3.0(.1) Honeycomb is now available for your device. Even better, the ROM is pretty stable for such an early development, and already has the Android Market up and running.

The ROM itself is actually a port of a Honeycomb ROM for the Notion Ink Adam, but you’d never know. It’s still very much a work in progress, but we had our doubts that the tablet would ever receive Honeycomb, unofficially, or otherwise. Dubbed Bottle of Smoke, the ROM is just the beginning of the project, and hopefully we’ll have a fully functional Honeycomb ROM for both the Adam and the G-Tablet soon.

Bottle of Smoke isn’t without its issues, though, as it is still in Alpha status. The camera is still buggy and doesn’t work right now, Flash doesn’t play in the browser (OpenGL issues), and High-def movies do not play. Despite a couple of lingering bugs throughout that aren’t as serious, this ROM is very usable. You can even overclock the Tegra 2 to 1.5GHz if you so choose!

Those of you who were just about to get rid of your G-Tablet may want to take a look at this ROM before doing so. Even in Alpha status, Bottle of Smoke brings value to the tablet, which is something ViewSonic itself couldn’t even do. Or hasn’t. Either way, if you have the G-Tablet kicking around still, we suggest you give the ROM a try.

To get Bottle of Smoke up and running properly on the tablet, you’ll have to go back to the stock software the G-Tablet ships with, and flash from there.

To get started, head over to the XDA thread discussion to find installation instructions and links to download the ROM.

If you’re running this ROM, tell us your experience in the comments below!

Definitely, There are geniouses working on theb3.0. Viewsonic actually left us in the cold. I am currently running a rom which is very close to the HC 3.0 made by these guys and I am impressed on what they do.

Viewsonic did not help me when I bought the UPC300-2.2 a month ago. Unfortunately I had to go for medical reasons and never had time to to have it returned. I viewsonic while at the hospital asking for help but to no avail. SO, I reached out for these guys which helped me to the teeth. I know that It will just be a matter of time the HC 3.0. Will be fully working. They are just testing them out to clean out the bugs then release it t the wild… coooll.

I’ve been running this ROM for a couple weeks and have been very happy. The Flash player issues due to the lack of OpenGL support is the only drawback. However, YouTube still plays fine through HTML5 so no real love lost. The system hooks up to both my wireless network and my BT headphones. Motion is smooth and operation is relatively stable (I’ve had maybe 2 or 3 crashes since adding it and I use my tablet almost daily). Live wallpapers are fine. Some wallpapers are fuzzy but most are fine. Angry Birds runs great.

    Greeting fellow gTablet owners.

While the talented devs at XDA and other place has manage to bring Honeycomb to the gTablet, they can only go so far (no camera, gps etc..) without official drivers and support from ViewSonic, NVIDIA and Google. If you wish to push ViewSonic to further support the gTablet, please join the Facebook campaign at http://on.fb.me/qD3E9r

I been running this for several weeks now it seems to run fast and reliable the only issue that i find is resizing of the screen doesn’t always work, and when waking up doesnt find my network till i click forget and resetup. Thank you for thr good rom

The rom is faster compare to Cyanogenmod 7, however, after couple of uses the Galary app keeps FC, then the broswer app FC.  The Flash Player doesnt work so Crackle doesnt work, Netflix works great.

the quick menus are great, the icons are smooth and fast. when rebooting it has power off only mode. its definitely a great start and has a great potential.

Thanks to all of the cooks.

The Flashback version of Honeycomb works great on my Gtab, in fact now the tablet is awesome. I don’t understand why Viewsonic doesn’t sell the Gtab with Honeycomb already on it or let the people with Android 2.2 to upgrade to it…that is just stupid to me.
