Apple’s first foldable iPhone may not arrive on time. According to NotebookCheck, Foxconn, the supplier responsible for assembling the iPhone Ultra, has run into production problems shortly after mass manufacturing began in early July 2026. The company is making adjustments to its manufacturing process, and a September shipment is not guaranteed.
This is the kind of news that tends to make Apple watchers nervous. The iPhone Ultra is expected to be announced alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, but production hiccups could push the actual ship date back by weeks. It has happened before: the iPhone X was announced on September 12, 2017, but customers didn’t receive their units until November 3.
The foldable phone market is one Apple has avoided until now, ceding ground to Samsung, Huawei, and others for years. A delayed or botched launch would hand competitors an easy news cycle and reinforce skepticism about whether Apple was ready to enter this category at all.
The problems Foxconn is dealing with are not surprising given the type of device. Foldable phones are mechanically complex, and the two components causing concern are exactly the ones you’d expect:
- The hinge mechanism
- The durability of the foldable display
Neither issue is unusual for a first-generation foldable in production. Samsung, Google, and Motorola have all faced similar challenges when building out foldable assembly lines. What matters is how quickly Foxconn can resolve them. Right now, that timeline is uncertain, with estimates ranging from days to weeks.
The iPhone Ultra itself has been the subject of steady leaks for months. In terms of design, it is reportedly similar in size to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, which launched this year at $1,899. On the hardware side, the device is expected to include:
- An Apple A20 Pro chip, shared with the iPhone 18 Pro
- Two rear cameras rather than the three or four found on current Pro models
- An 18-megapixel front camera with a square sensor
- A side-mounted fingerprint sensor
- Two batteries with a combined capacity of 4,883 mAh
The dual-battery setup is notable. Foldable devices typically struggle with battery life because the larger chassis means a larger display drawing more power. A combined 4,883 mAh is a reasonable capacity for a device this size, though real-world performance will depend heavily on display efficiency and software optimization.
Apple entering the foldable market is a significant moment for the category. Analyst projections already suggest Samsung’s share of the foldable market could drop to around 32% once Apple ships a competing product. That kind of competitive pressure tends to accelerate innovation across the board, which is good for consumers regardless of which brand they prefer.
For now, the September announcement looks likely to proceed as planned. Whether the iPhone Ultra actually ships that month is a different question, and one that won’t be answered until Foxconn works through its current production challenges.
