Forget the fold. Huawei just announced a phone that takes the wide-screen format everyone’s been loving on foldables and makes it work on a regular, non-folding slab. That’s the Pura X View, and it might be the strangest, most genuinely original phone concept we’ve seen in years.
Wide-body foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold series have shown there’s a real appetite for a wider display. But they’re thick, they’re expensive, and the crease never fully disappears. Huawei’s answer is to skip the hinge entirely. The Pura X View has a 16:9.5 aspect ratio on a 6.39-inch OLED screen, which makes it noticeably wider than a standard smartphone but thinner and simpler than any foldable. The bezels measure just 1.05mm all the way around, and they’re perfectly symmetrical. At 6.68mm thick and 201 grams, this thing is genuinely slim for what it is.
A display that earns attention
The screen runs at 2232 x 1320 resolution with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It’s not the highest resolution we’ve seen, but the wide format is the real story here. If you watch a lot of video or use your phone as a mini tablet for reading and productivity, that extra horizontal real estate makes a difference without the bulk of a foldable. The 16:9.5 ratio is a little unusual, but once you see how much screen you’re getting in a phone that fits in one pocket, it makes more sense.
The camera setup is no joke
Three cameras sit on the back, arranged in a horizontal bar near the top. That placement is smart, by the way, because it stops the phone rocking when it’s flat on a table. The main shooter is a 200-megapixel RYYB sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. RYYB is Huawei’s own sensor design that replaces green pixels with yellow to pull in more light. It’s a genuine imaging advantage in low light, not just a spec sheet number. Alongside it, you get a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS and an 8-megapixel ultrawide that also handles macro shots. The front camera is 50 megapixels at f/2.6.
Battery and specs that hold their own
The Pura X View runs on the Kirin 9030S chip with 12GB of RAM and HarmonyOS 7. Connectivity covers 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and dual-frequency GPS. Water resistance is rated at both IP68 and IP69, which is better than most phones offer. But honestly, the number that stands out most is the battery: 7,000mAh. That’s enormous for a phone this slim. Wired charging tops out at 66W and wireless at 50W. It won’t charge as fast as some competitors, but with a battery that big, you probably won’t be reaching for the cable as often anyway.

Price and the obvious catch
The Pura X View starts at CNY 5,999, which works out to roughly $893. For what you’re getting, that’s a fair price by flagship standards. The problem, and it’s a real one, is that Huawei’s global availability is still murky. This phone launched in China, and there’s no confirmation yet of a wider international rollout. So if you’re outside China, you’re probably looking at grey market imports for now.
Still, the concept matters regardless of where you can buy it. Huawei has put an idea on the table that other manufacturers will almost certainly pay attention to. A wide-format phone that doesn’t require a hinge, doesn’t have a crease, and doesn’t cost as much as a foldable? That’s worth watching. Whether anyone else picks up the idea is a different question, but Huawei just proved it works.
