This was a very tumultuous year around the globe with natural disasters, uprisings, crazy reality TV divorces and more, so what do you think was the most-searched for term on Yahoo in 2011? It was “iPhone,” the company said in a post.
Apple’s iPhone is always something that garners a lot of traction online – believe me, we know this – but this was the first year that it topped Yahoo’s list and it was ahead of terms like “Casey Anthony,” “Osama bin Laden” and “Japan Earthquake.” This was the first year that the iPhone was available on carriers other than AT&T, so that may account for the bump in traffic.
The top 10 list includes:
- 1. iPhone
- 2. Casey Anthony
- 3. Kim Kardashian
- 4. Katy Perry
- 5. Jennifer Lopez
- 6. Lindsay Lohan
- 7. “American Idol”
- 8. Jennifer Aniston
- 9. Japan Earthquake
- 10. Osama bin Laden
Another possible explanation for this bump in search traffic is that Apple delayed the introduction of the new model by a few months, which could have juiced demand for rumors. The rumor mill is already going for the next iPhone, so expect it to stay toward the tops of the search charts next year.
