Samsung Galaxy S III vs HTC One X, which one you prefer?

My carrier contract is about to expire in a month or so and I’ll definitely use the opportunity to get the new phone with a new two-year contract. Two devices that top my list are the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X, both rocking pretty similar specs. As an existing (and pretty satisfied) Galaxy S II owner I’m inclined to get Samsung’s smartphone, even though its camera isn’t as great as the one HTC’s baby sports. However, SGS3 does have a slightly bigger screen which is always a plus, as long as the phone remains pocketable — unlike the Galaxy Note, which can hardly fit my pockets.

As you probably know, both HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III are awesome devices and one could hardly go wrong by picking any of the two. Both come with quad-core processors (though some versions of HTC One X use Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4), 720p HD screens, HSPA+, Wi-Fi, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a ton of built-in storage and so on.

On the other hand, if I’m going to commit myself on another 24-month contract I want to be extra careful, since we’re talking about the device I’ll be using for quite some time (aside from the phones I get to test every now and then).

So if I don’t hear anything bad about Samsung’s flagship phone in the next couple of weeks I’ll most likely continue to be the Korean company’s customer. What about you? Presuming you want an Android phone, I’m eager to know which of the two phones you like better? Is it the HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III?

    HTC ONE X by far……

HTC ONE X becuse its built much better galaxy s3 its very light and flimsy

      • Jack

Light and “flimsy” is not equivalent to poor quality. Conversely, heavy and rigid is not equivalent to good quality. Case in point, the extremely fragile and shatter prone iphone.

Both the S3 and the htc phone are made of polycarbonate, and the only difference is the S3 has a back cover while the htc sacrifices replaceable batteries and storage by going unibody.

The only thing debatable between the two phones are the screen. Both of them are really good and it comes down to preference.

        But the S3 has

        Much faster performance
        Much longer battery life
        Better camera
        Additional storage
More intuitive UI with more helpful features

These points are all supported by nearly all 3rd party reviewers.

Htc’s latest offering, while good in its own right, falls noticeably short to the Galaxy S3

        • Asidhowz

have both the s3 and HOX and the HOX is my favourite by far both phones are extremely quick and fluid for everything i do but the HOX is my favourite its just feels better to me, nothing concrete just overall i prefer it, its just an overall better experience and i really dont care for the design of the Samsung and to say that the S3 has
Much faster performanceMuch longer battery lifeBetter cameraAdditional storage, (perhaps but not a problem for me)More intuitive UI with more helpful features.. is absolute rubbish and you obviously haven’t used both phones… why post stuff you have no experience of??

          • Truthyo

“why post stuff you have no experience of??….have both the s3 and HOX”

Sure, I’ll bet people will believe some anonymous poster “claiming” to have both phones, over a plethora of objective reviewers who actually compared both phones extensively and stated that the S3 is significantly better.

“Much faster performanceMuch longer battery lifeBetter cameraAdditional
storage, (perhaps but not a problem for me)More intuitive UI with more
helpful features.. is absolute rubbish…is absolute rubbish”

Honestly, that you would even try to spin objective FACTS as being false is a little sad and pathetic.

You tell me how it’s absolute rubbish when ALMOST EVERY objective reviewer who has compared BOTH phones says exactly what Jack said.

The fact that even you admit that you have nothing concrete for liking your htc proves you’re likely feeling buyer’s remorse, trying to justify your inferior purchase.

Let me repeat what Jack said.
It’s NOT DEBATABLE and it’s NOT a matter of opinion that the Galaxy S3 has faster performance, better battery life, additional storage, and a more feature packed UI. These have ALL been proven by objective reviewers.

Samsung Galaxy S III by far……

  • Samuel Francisco

Important to note though, that Exynos 4412 outperforms Tegra 3. Plus with SGS3 you get a microSD card slot and its battery is removable which makes it nearly unbrickable.

    • Venkat

just say u r a samsung fan dont say stupid things like exynos is better than tegra 3

      • PeterM

Um, because exynos IS better than tegra 3.

What’s with uneducated people giving opinions?

        • Venkataguha

not punctuating my previous comment doesn’t make me uneducated.
but posting snide comments makes you uncouth.
your not a super genius to deduce my intellectual capacity.

          • Steve

You’re so uneducated that you didn’t even realize that he said you’re uneducated because you didn’t know the objective fact that Exynos is superior to Tegra.

It had NOTHING to do with punctuation idiot.

  • George

    CPU/GPU:
Exynos 4412 does NOT outperform Tegra 3. Anyone who claims that does not understand hardware. It is better to say that the S3 brings better performance in terms of Java applet presentations and that sort of things, compared to the One X. As long as it is software, you can maneuver the device the way you want it to go though you should consider the price tag in terms of warranty and battery consumption. Do remember that the One X has the sense UI running on top of the Android ICS suit, which is a heavy burden, but is a very user friendly – and runs some background processes in addition.
BUT… if you try to match gaming strength… You may have a clear winner there… The Tegra 3.
Add to this the ability of getting Tegra 3 tailored games through the Tegra Zone web site, the constant investments in research and development in improving consumers devices currently holding their CPU and GPU – well… No device can beat that to-date.
The One X is also better quality built though the design medal of honor goes to the S3.

My choice is the One X and just because nVidia was planning the device’s architecture. And in data architecture (<>)… they are far ahead of any CPU/GPU maker out there today.

If you want a living proof – just checkout the XBOX (the old one – by nVidia, compared to the 365 – by ATI).

    Storage:
Point taken when it comes to the restrictions of adding storage or replacing battery. This is, in some way, takes out the fun of freedom… the freedom to choose. BUT, if you take a good look closer, you will notice that the freedom to choose is between what alternatives? 16 to 32 to 48GB? (64GB price tag is unjustified in my opinion, so its out of the ‘game’)? If you purchase the One X, you will get a Dropbox account which collaborates wonderfully with the UI. So, its 41GB (US version) vs 64GB tops…. OR 57GB vs 64GB tops… hmmmmm….

    Display:
One X is a bit warmer than the S3 in terms of color. Size difference is almost unnoticed. Though I love, personally, more reds and yellows… it is really up to you to choose (the S3 is more tending towards black and blueish colors). The One thing I didn’t love in the One X is that the on screen menu button is taking space. I would take that full black stripe on the bottom and make it a bit transparent.

    To sum things up…
When it comes to the final conclusion, please note the price tag… and what you get for it (in terms of YOUR PERSONAL preferences).
The One X is stronger pack when it comes to Multimedia. The S3 is more built for net performance. This is why in my personal view, the One X is more suitable for me.

They are both wonderful devices. If you pick one up, you wont be sorry for letting the other go.

    One last thing!!!!!
    Have fun and enjoy!!!!!

But Samsung has TouchWiz has as well so isn’t that a burden to it as well. Plus NVidia may have been planning the device architecture but they’ve also limited it as well. An example would be how the device is 40nm whilst Samsung’s Exynos processor is at 32nm which would be Exynos 4412 is a much more efficient processor. Another limitation would be the fact that they’ve opted for a single channel memory channel which reduces the bandwidth of the chip, this won’t help games with up to the scale of Infinity Blade; although Shadowgun and Sonic seem to run quite well despite this.

Those are good arguments. In my opinion, after seeing the two devices, the Touchwiz has lower burden on the CPU rather than the Sense UI because the Sense UI integrates 3rd party software within its overlay (e.g the Dropbox client, designed by Dropbox) wheres the S3 has its own in-house integration with other services such as the gMail. When two companies are designing two different overlays, those will never lead to the same results. Bare in mind that the S3 has ICS 4.0.4 vs the One X hosting a 4.0.3 version tag. That’s a big difference.
As for efficiency, the 32nm technology should be more efficient than the Tegra 3 in terms of electricity consumption. The Tegra 3 is using 40nm LPG which means that it can leverage energy consumption adjusted to the real time needs. To be honest, I didn’t check that part thoroughly so I don’t know which one is more energy efficient. Personally, I don’t think there is a big difference.
As for Dual channel memory. Well, the good argument should be that the S3 uses dual memory channel at the same speed rate of the One X. Unfortunately, it is not true. The S3 uses up to 400Mhz of memory speed within each channel.
As for games. There are games optimized to nVidia. It is an easier platform to develop for in terms of 3D and OpenGL instruction set than the Mali GPU.
As for the limitation, I didn’t follow. I would be happy if you’d elaborate more.

You guys really know your hardware…

  • C4ipp3r

HTC sll the way.. Screen is just unbeliaveble, sound is great and the sense interface is very good.

  • Cashmony

My EVO 4G LTE is incredible! The added camera button and expandable memory were a must for me so it was an easy choice. If I were on AT&T I would go with SGIII for that reason alone, I’m not a fan of Dropbox. It’s a tough call but if you’re a Samsung fan stick with them, I’m partial to HTC for build quality and Sense. U really can’t go wrong either way tho.

  • Hammams

You fail to mention two major differences: Removable battery and external SD card.

    • Anonymous

For those who don’t need either, the One X’s unibody is much better quality.

  • Willy

How tall are you?..you said that Galaxy Note does not fit into your pockets!!…jeje..Did you know that so far more than 10 million people  around the world had already bought the Galaxy Note and it is still selling like hot bread. BTW with your small size, you can be employed in the sequel of “Lord of the Rings”…MY PRECIOUS!!!.. For the average size person, the Galaxy Note is unique!

    HTC ON X  by far!

  • Abc

tried both for 14 days(refund), in my experience the S3 felt more solid as a design. The battery life was a bit better on the S3 aswell. Another thing that had me choose the S3 over HOX was the simple fact that the “wake up” button is places on the front, instead on in the top like HOX(Stupid decision imo), Next comes all the known fact as, removable batteri, SD card and so on. Overlall they where both great, but the S3 felt better and more up to date.

quite honestly living with the one x for a week and now just getting the s3 a few days ago because i returned it, i really do like the s3. the one x was an incredible phone, but 16gb with no expandable storage is really the only reason i returned it. the s3 is definitely a slight bit faster, the camera is clearly better, without a doubt. sure they have similar specs on paper, but im able to blow up pictures on my computer from the s3 and they look awesome. the one x’s didn’t. that being said, if you can live with the one x’s shortcomings and or you’re like me and will be buying a phone off craigslist sometime next year, you should be able to manage. overall though, the s3 is a better phone. thats my opinion though, because better is subjective to your needs & wants. its not a one size fits all deal.

HTC One X wins of course. But big up to Samsung Galaxy SIII for being the next best thing. That is by far no mean achievement
