ZTE is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its mobile terminals division with the production of the company’s 500 millionth handset, making it the first Chinese mobile device brand to achieve the milestone.

Speaking at the company’s event, Chairman Hou Weigui said that ZTE’s focus will be on “boutique devices,” and that the mobile phone division will get all the resources and support needed to develop and grow.

As part of the plan, the Chinese company will put in extra efforts to strengthen ZTE’s brand and engage consumers. “It is crucial for ZTE to upgrade our brand and build brand equity. ZTE’s technology stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s leading companies, but the value of our brand is still under-appreciated,” Executive Vice President Mr. He Shiyou said.

ZTE’s mobile terminals division was established in 1998, and it took them 10 years to manufacture 100 million handsets. Hitting the 500 million mark, on the other hand, took just 5 years.

Going forward, ZTE’s goal is to reach a global top-3 position within three years, and build a world top-5 brand.
