Katamari Damacy Rolls onto Playstation Network

Stop the presses, everyone. There’s some major news ricocheting through the cosmos, like a flamboyant king on a bender. Katamari Damacy is coming to PSN next week!

Today the Playstation Blogcast announced that the classic title will be part of next Tuesday’s Playstation Store update. It will be released as a PS2 Classic which so it won’t be available for PS Vita, unfortunately.  The PS2 classics generally go for $9.99 to $14.99, so it’s a good deal on a cult classic that can be hard to find. Hard copies online  are generally going for over $20.

Katamari Damacy was like nothing seen before, when it came out for the PS2 in 2004. It put you in control of the Prince, whose father the King of the Cosmos had destroyed the stars in the sky. The prince is sent to earth to make new stars out of Katamaris, ever-expanding balls of ….. well, everything that you roll through strange cartoon landscapes using the Dualshock’s double analog sticks. The art style of the game was strangely beautiful and it was full of humor. But the soundtrack, done by lots of Japanese djs and experimental musicians, is one of the best any game has ever had. Seriously, it’s worth $14.99 just to hear the music.

There have been spin offs on both of Sony’s handhelds as well as Xbox 360 and PS3 iterations, and they all maintain a lot of the humor and fun gameplay. But it’s widely considered (by me, I am wide) that the 2 PS2 Katamari games (We Love Katamari came out for pS2 in 2005) are the best.

Grab your copy next Tues in the Playstation Store and roll on, brother, roll on.
