Sony is letting some of its older Xperia models ride off into the sunset, discontinuing OS updates on a number of devices. While the Xperia devices being discontinued aren’t of the newer variety, the discontinuation of OS updates for the devices may effect a good number of users. Of course, Xperia owners on the list could install a custom ROM which would bring various features of Google’s official Android updates to their devices. Most of the devices are currently running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and will not be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat.
Xperia models that will no longer receive Android OS updates from Sony are as follows:
- Xperia Arc S
- Xperia S
- Xperia SL
- Xperia Ion
- Xperia Acro S
- Xperia Go
- Xperia P
- Xperia U
- Xperia J
- Xperia Miro
- Xperia Tipo
- Xperia Sola
If you have one of the above mentioned devices, don’t expect to see a software update from Sony anytime in the future. Sony has begun updating its support pages reflecting the news, with the wording “last and final version” appearing over the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean logo.
If you own one of the above devices and would like to update the OS of your device, head over to CyanogenMod to check and see if there is a custom ROM that may suit your needs.
