Google’s Android distribution numbers for July are in, delivering some pretty awesome news for Android enthusiasts everywhere. Android 4.4 KitKat now runs on 17.9% of Android devices, up around 4% from the previous month. Jelly Bean is still the most used version of Android, with Gingerbread hanging on for dear life. With Google’s Android L release looming on the horizon, it’s good to see KitKat gain some ground, even if it is just a few inches.

One thing to remember though – there are currently three versions of Android 4.4 KitKat, which isn’t reflected in the distribution numbers. There’s Android 4.4.2, 4.4.3 and 4.4.4, with most Android devices bound to 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 at the moment. KitKat itself is fragmented, and that could create headaches for Android users and carriers alike.
