Nokia Siemens Networks selects Ubiquisys for 3G femto cell solution

Nokia Siemens Networks has selected Ubiquisys to cooperate and market 3G femto cell solutions to operators around the world. A brief introduction to femto cells: your mobile operator gives you a box that you connect to your broadband internet, now that box handles your voice and data versus the cell tower somewhere in your neighborhood. You benefit by getting signal in your home where you otherwise wouldn’t and they benefit by removing the load off their cell towers. It is a win win situation in theory, but I’m unaware of any operators who have deployed a large cell femtocell augmented network.

Some may find this relevant: Google in July of 2007 invested in Ubiquisys. The exact amount isn’t known, but is less than $25 million.
