NetLingo: Webtop

netlingo-logo2Yep, my fave tech-terms site (NetLingo) is at it again, coming up with a great phrase for the recent disassociation between applications and presentation logic:

webtop

The name for a desktop that can be accessed from a remote location via a Web browser.

Quite pertinent too I thought, what with the advent of applications that blend on-device processing with backend interweb-connected servers. The proliferation of this sort of dispersed processing means that currently “computers” per se can have remote desktops (which in itself isn’t anything new), running all within the web browser (that’s the new part).

And these aren’t trivial apps either – we might be talking photo-editing, full office-work applications like word processors, spreadsheets, or even programming environments. Now that mobile devices have matured in terms of wideband data access, it won’t be long until we get mature services like these webtops running on them smoothly too.

My only question then is what do you call a webtop running on a netbook?! Answers on a postcard please….!
