While the US side of T-Mobile’s operations has seen more than 1,000,000 (1 million) T-Mobile G1’s finding homes in subscribers’ pockets, T-Mobile UK is on track to sell 100,000 of the Android-powered smartphones in time for the release of the much-anticipated Android 1.5 Cupcake update. T-Mobile says that it will have sold 100,000 G1 handsets in just six months since the handset’s initial UK launch.
Richard Warmsley, Head of Internet and Entertainment, T-Mobile, says that:
“Sales of the T-Mobile G1 have exceeded our expectations – we are very excited to hit the milestone of 100,000 units sold in just over six months. Our customer research has shown us that nine out of ten G1 users would recommend it to a friend and this is down to the great user experience, web browsing via T-Mobile’s award winning Broadband network, the value a customer receives on our 18 month price plans, and G1 features such as the slide-out QWERTY keyboard.”
The Android 1.5 Cupcake update should help drive even more sales of the G1 in the UK. Android 1.5 promises to deliver video-recording, YouTube uploading, homescreen widget support, voice recognition and an on-screen keyboard, as well as other features, to the Android-loving public. And, T-Mobile UK is expecting to launch its second Android smartphone later this year, which may spark a surge in Android sales.
